Right. One thing that I noticed but forgot to comment on is that this
opens up a new tactical option for players. It could allow players to have
their characters do risky things and get a potential benefit from it that
would otherwise be canceled out by the risk.
For example, suppose that high ground gives a bonus of 1 when attacking;
but there's a crumbling wall that is unstable and gives a penalty of 1
when attacking from it. In a games with a single roll, there isn't any
point in trying for that particular high ground.
By separating the bonuses and the penalties out, taking that particular
high ground gives an extra die in the success pool as well as an extra die
in the failure pool. This ends up increasing the possible degree of both
success and failure. (Gods & Monsters does this, but only for warriors and
only in combat.) Depending on the odds and the other rules of the game,
players might occasionally find that useful.
