Good question.

In film making (at least in the LotR 'making of' DVDs), a lot of
the time they made sculptures for the express purpose of scanning
them and using the 3D models in computer animation.

In this case, the 3D digital model is the 'work', and the
physical sculpture is the high resolution 'source'. The latter
then is the preferred source to provide, but obviously it's
impractical to distribute it with copies of the digital model.

This is why I said trying to be precise is probably opening a
huge can of worms.
