I like d10s and d20s - they give nice range of values. d6s either
restrict you to a small range, or give a steep bell curve if you
use 2 or 3. You could always try Yags with 3d6 instead of a d20,
though some bits would have to be re-thought (though possibly
only the fumble-on-a-1 bit).

Yags did originally use 2d10 instead of a d20, but the players
complained that there wasn't enough randomness.

I normally like rules-heavy combat systems because they add more
interest to combat for the players. If the players aren't there,
then a lot of their requirement (as I see it) goes away. I'd
probably be happy with an Amber-like system of highest stat wins
(modified by the player's description of what they are doing).
