3D works fine for other games, including the SL client but it doesn't
seem to like switching to full-screen mode and the graphics are jittery
in windowed mode. I'd troubleshoot it but I can't see how to verbose the
program output and I can't log onto the SL forums with a non-credited
account.

Anything in the command line output?
As I recall, SL has a unique caching mechanism for storing and rendering
models. At first it may indeed appear to be running slowly but its
actually the caching system catching up with the world. Sometimes after
a few minutes things calm down.
